Eighth Grade FCS Students Complete 14th Year of Service Project

Pine-Richland Middle School eighth-grade Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) students are making a meaningful impact one pillowcase at a time through their long-standing partnership with Ryan’s Case for Smiles, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children with serious illnesses.

For the past 14 years, Pine-Richland students have participated in a hands-on sewing and service-learning project in which they design and create handmade pillowcases for children receiving medical care. This year, the district proudly celebrates more than 10,000 pillowcases donated by Pine-Richland eighth-grade students since the project began.

The pillowcases are donated to Children’s Surgical Center North through Ryan’s Case for Smiles, whose mission is to bring comfort and emotional support to hospitalized children through colorful, handmade pillowcases that brighten hospital rooms and provide a sense of care during difficult times. The organization recently celebrated reaching over three million pillowcases donated nationwide, with Pine-Richland students contributing significantly to that achievement.

“This project allows students to see how the skills they learn in the classroom can positively impact others,” said Ms. Erika Graham, FCS teacher. “Students are not only developing sewing and design skills, but also empathy, compassion, teamwork, and community awareness.”

As part of the project, students also write thoughtful pen pal letters to accompany each pillowcase. Over the years, Pine-Richland students have received many heartfelt thank you letters from families expressing their gratitude and sharing how the pillowcases helped children feel more comfortable leaving the hospital and while recovering at home. These personal connections help students better understand the impact that compassion and service can have on others.

The project aligns closely with both Pennsylvania Family and Consumer Sciences standards and national FCS standards by integrating technical sewing and textile construction skills with service learning, communication, problem-solving, and career readiness competencies. Throughout the unit, students learn that sewing and design can extend beyond the classroom and become tools for service, comfort, and human connection.
